Principles vs. Tactics: How to write a sales email in under 30 minutes

Have you ever tried to solve a Rubik’s Cube?

You know, those small 3×3 cubes with different colors on each side?

Last year I finally learned to solve one of those bastards.

And there’s actually a great lesson to learn when it comes to writing emails that sell your product… without being spammy… or, without even being a great writer.

So how does a Rubik’s Cube relate to how to write a sales email?

Let me explain:

The “world’s most feared negotiator,” Jim Camp, talked about how principles would always trump tactics.

Here’s what he meant:

When you follow a set of principles versus focusing on “specific phrases” to say in a negotiation, you’re immediately playing a completely different game than 97% of all other negotiators.

You see, in any area of business (and life in general), you can always find timeless principles.

Principles that just works.

They’ve always worked.

And they will always work.

Here’s what I mean:

When you follow a set of principles, you are following a proven path to success.

Same thing is true when writing emails that sell.

Or learning how to solve a Rubik’s Cube.

For example, with a Rubik’s Cube, there are certain “algorithms” you follow to solve the cube.

They’re essentially different “moves,” depending on the situation.

And when you follow the correct set of algorithms, you’re going to solve the cube (my record is 1 minute 25 seconds).

That’s the power of following a set of principles.

For example, keeping with the Rubik’s Cube example:

Did you know there are 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible combinations or 43.2 quintillion combinations to solve a Rubik’s Cube?

However, no matter how many combinations… or… situations you run into, there are only a few sets of principles you need to learn to solve the cube.

Just like when you sit down to write an email to your email list.

It doesn’t matter what product you sell.

It doesn’t matter how big your list is.

It doesn’t matter if you’re writing an engagement email or a sales email.

Because once you follow a proven set of principles when writing your emails, you never have to worry about writer’s block… or worry about how to come up with great ideas… or worry about seeming spammy or salesy.

It’s those principles I use to crank out new content every day.

And, in less than 30 minutes.
